Vibrating Body is a prototype developed during the Choreographic Coding Lab #07 that happened in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
But what is a "choreographic coding lab"? you might ask. Here's a description from their website:
The Choreographic Coding Lab (CCL) format offers unique opportunities of exchange and collaboration for digital media ‘code savvy’ artists who have an interest in translating aspects of choreography and dance into digital form and applying choreographic thinking to their own practice. Working with patterns in movement scores and structures through finding, generating and applying them with results ranging from prototypes for artworks to new plug-ins for working with dance related datasets. CCLs also seek to support a sustainable collaborative practice among its participants encouraging ongoing exchange in a growing artistic research community.
CCLs are an outcome of Motion Bank, a four-year research project of The Forsythe Company focused on the creation of on line digital scores with guest choreographers.
During 5 days, several artists, dancers, creative technologists gathered at SESC Palladium in order to create meaningful connections between body and technology.
Vibrating Body was what our team came up with. We basically translate one person's movement, captured via a Kinect and then sent, via Bluetooth, to an Arduino strapped on another person's body. The idea here was to create a tool that fostered new possibilities for improvisation.
My role during this week was creating the code for "Vibrating Body" in collaboration with other participants.
